My Upcoming Trip to Mongolia – Some Thoughts, Some Fears
30Three weeks in Mongolia. Badaboom. My heart is racing and I start feeling queasy. What have I done? Three weeks. Desert, nomads, trekking, taking a “shower” in rivers, sleeping in tents. I mean, I’m not really a posh chick, I jumped out of planes, raced with 120khm through the desert, fell from a camel (twice) and was hunting for rabbits in Nomansland. But this. Mongolia. This will be different. This is an adventure.

When I was ten years old I wrote into my diary that I want to be an archaeologist, because I thought it would be as adventurous as being Indiana Jones. And actually that’s the reason why I’m travelling. There’s a ten year old girl inside me, wearing a fedora and longing for adventures and exploring the world.

What am I doing there?
To be honest, I don’t really know it. As always I’m completely unprepared. That’s why I called Bettina from Weltweitwandern, the tour operator I’m going to Mongolia with. What do I need to bring? What can I leave at home? What exactly are we doing there again? I guess she was shaking her head in disbelief about my reactions. WHAT? We have to take a “shower” IN A RIVER every now and then? Wait, what, we won’t have electricity every day?? I have to prepare a song, because it could happen that they expect me to sing something??? OMG. One bottle of vodka per person during the trip? Ok, deal.

There will be trekking, not so much, but a lot. We are going to discover the vast of Mongolia. The desert, eternal ice, we will be cooking with nomads and there will be camels. (No THANKS!) We will see monasteries and temples, hot springs and breathtaking nature. Solitude, emptiness, perfection. And for sure we’re also spending some time in Ulan Bator, obviously the coldest capital in the world.
If you want to have a look at the whole trip you can do this here. (It’s in German though)

“Sometimes travelling can be yukky”
Stefan from kaffeeersatz.com knows what he is talking about, contrary to me he IS an outdoor freak. Thank God he is also a really real good friend and will borrow me some stuff for the trip, I actually didn’t know I would need let alone ever heard about it before (cue: UV water filter). He also said I won’t need a deodorant. After two days I wouldn’t care about this anymore. The only thing that matters then, is nature and if your feet are carrying you one more day. (The last time I left my apartment without make up was in the 80ies) We may as well expect the worst.

Being marooned
Hello, my name is Yvonne and I’m an internet junkie. Besides the physical exertions I’m expecting on this trip, THIS is the worst. No internet, no blogging, no Instagram, no nothing. I start getting withdrawal symptoms only by thinking of this. And in the same time I’m sooooo looking forward to this. Finally just travelling for the fun of it again. Exploring, experiencing another world and nothing else matters.
One more week to go, think I should start packing…
What do you think? What will Mongolia have in store for me?

Was für ein irres Abenteuer! Oh man, ich wär so gerne dabei… Das klingt wie Freiheit pur. Nachdem du nicht bei den strengsten Elter der Welt bist – steck noch ne Flasche Wodka ein
Bin so gespannt, was du erzählst!!!
Ich freu mich auf bald, viel Spaß und fühl dich gedrückt,
Anna
Nice post, Yvonne. Felt very authentic. Sure you’ll manage just fine though!
Amazing. You are going to have the best time. I hear you about internet withdrawl symptoms. It will be good for the soul though. Then you’ll have so much to write about when you get back. xoxo
You’ll be fine and we can’t wait to read all about it!
You go girl! I’m sure you’ll surprise yourself with your ability to cope with the privations
I would love the chance to be without internet for three weeks – would give me chance to get back to reality and chill out. Enjoy the trip – I am quite envious.
Wow, that is a bit too adventurous for me!
Re: the Internet. I think you’ll get used to it and maybe sorta enjoy it. If it were me I’d probably need to schedule a few catch up days for after the trip.
Sounds like an awesome adventure…except the shower in a river thing:)
Wow, that’s going to be an awesome trip! I mean, how can any trip with a pre-requisite packing item of Vodka not fail to be awesome
We hitchhiked from western Mongolia across to UB in 2008 and it was one of the funnest trips in the world. Travel in Mongolia can be quite rugged, but I’m sure that your outfitter will make it a lot more comfortable than soloing it… it’s not fun being slammed in a Russian van with 18 people when it should only fit 12 for 15 straight hours!
Things You Didn’t Know About Mongolia: http://otptravel.com/blog/things-you-didnt-know-about-mongolia/
You’re absolutely right about Ulaanbaatar to be the coldest capital in the world. No wonder its already gotten chilly autumn has arrived in UB. I’m sure in the countryside its getting even colder so make sure to bring lots of warm clothes. So no showers and laundry or 3 weeks , thats going to be a challenge. Anyways have a great trip ! greetings from UB
This sounds AMAZING!! I can’t wait to read your posts once you get back to the Land of the Internet!
Alles Liebe, Sophie
Have fun! Mongolia is amazing! I traveled there in 2010 for 12 days. It inspired me to write more than just about any other place I have been. I’d been living in China for about three years at that point, and Mongolia made me realize how much I’d been taking for granted about China (language, culture, food, expectations, etc.) I went on a 4-day trek with no shower, and very much appreciated the shower when we got back to the hostel in Ulaan Bataar. If you’re interested, here are some blog posts and pictures from my trip: http://www.leslieforman.com/category/travels/mongolia/page/2/
3 weeks is a very long time! But it is a beautiful place. I did just a few days there and I felt like that was a longgggggg time
This sounds … challenging. Not sure I could do the internet rehab myself. Did a few days in Cyprus a few weeks ago, and at least it was hot and beachy. You’ll have loads to write about though, I’m sure of that!
Sounds like a pretty incredible adventure to me. Challenging yes, but I am sure it will very rewarding.
Hi! Its totally my dream to visit this country, and I’m totally in love with that country, from just one single movie I saw. I feel I just must visit there, as my soul calling me. I’d be glad if before my trip (which I plan for next July 2013) I could ask you some questions
Thanks and I hope you going to have the time of your life!
Hi?! greetings from Mongolia. I have only one question, if you dont mind: what was that movie? xoxo, just wanted to know. thanks. BTW, welcome to Mongolia
Sure, it was “the story of the weeping camel”, you probably heard about it. It is half-documentary, and shows the very core of the beliefs and the inside. Liked it so much. Hope to get there soon, right after graduating
thanks!!
Aanhaa… I see… thats great movie. Good luck with your graduation! and welcome! thanks
Looks amazing! We really want to visit one day soon.
It’s going to be amazing! I can’t wait to hear all about it. I hope you write a couple of posts after you finish off that bottle of vodka!
