The Netherlands is small and the trains are excellent, which means almost everything worth seeing sits within ninety minutes of Amsterdam Centraal. That is the good news. The awkward part is that roughly half of these places are better reached by train on your own, and the other half are genuinely easier on a guided tour \u2014 and nobody tells you which is which, because most guides are trying to sell you the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After eight years living in Amsterdam, here is the honest split \u2014 including the three cases where the tour is actually cheaper<\/em> than doing it yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Train or Tour? The Honest Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Take the train when the destination is a city.<\/strong> Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague all have stations in the centre, run several trains an hour, and need no itinerary at all. There is no booking and no fixed time \u2014 you turn up and tap in. A guided tour to any of them is money spent on something NS already does better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a tour when the destination is not a city.<\/strong> Zaanse Schans, Giethoorn and Keukenhof are villages, gardens and open-air sites with awkward final legs \u2014 a bus from a station, a boat you have to arrange, a timed entry that sells out. The tour is not really buying you a guide. It is buying you the logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there is one place where you want a car.<\/strong> The Kr\u00f6ller-M\u00fcller sits inside the Hoge Veluwe National Park. You can reach it by train and bus, but the point of the day is visiting the park as well as the museum, which means arriving when you like and leaving when you are ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One practical note on the Rotterdam train.<\/strong> The Intercity Direct saves about twenty minutes but costs \u20ac3.20 extra on top of the normal fare, and you have to tap the separate supplement reader on the platform. Miss it and you are fined. Visitors get caught by this constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zaanse Schans: Windmills, Cheese and Clogs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Zaanse Schans is very touristic. It is also very well done, and I would still tell you to go. Working windmills you can climb inside, a cheese farm, a clog workshop, all half an hour north of the city. It delivers exactly the Netherlands people picture before they arrive, and it does not pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can get there independently with a change at Zaandam and a bus. The guided version removes the long transit and often has combination tickets with other touristic sites, like our recommendation below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better value: add Volendam and Marken<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Volendam and Marken are two old fishing villages on the IJsselmeer. I would not make a separate trip for them \u2014 but grouped with Zaanse Schans into a single northern loop, they are excellent, and that is exactly what the combined tour does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pricing makes the decision easy. Zaanse Schans alone starts around \u20ac23. Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken together start around \u20ac29. Six euros buys you two extra villages and turns a half day into a full one. Unless you specifically want to be back in Amsterdam by lunchtime, take the longer one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keukenhof: The One Unmissable Trip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are in Amsterdam between mid-March and mid-May, go to Keukenhof. It is an absolute must, and it is the only trip on this list with a deadline \u2014 the gardens close for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting there is the awkward part, because Keukenhof is not near a train station. The entry ticket that includes the shuttle bus from Amsterdam starts around \u20ac35 and is the sensible minimum. A guided tour from around \u20ac93 adds Zaanse Schans and a guide to the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giethoorn: Go, But Consider Staying the Night<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Giethoorn has canals where the streets should be. You get around it by boat, there are no cars in the old village, and it is as pretty as the photographs suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is the thing almost nobody tells you: nearly everyone who visits Giethoorn arrives on a day trip from Amsterdam. That means the crowds land in one narrow block in the middle of the day and then leave again. First thing in the morning and late in the evening, the village is essentially empty \u2014 and that is when it is genuinely magical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giethoorn is better as an overnight than as a day trip.<\/strong> Stay the night and you get the village at both ends of the day with the coaches gone. If a day trip is all your schedule allows, still go \u2014 it is worth the trip. But if you have the flexibility, this is the one place on the list where staying over changes the experience completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are doing it in a day, book the combined tour rather than the Giethoorn-only one. It includes Zaanse Schans and a canal cruise, and at the time of writing it is cheaper<\/em> than the standalone Giethoorn trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utrecht: The One Everyone Overlooks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Utrecht is 27 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal and it is the prettiest city in the country (in my opinion). The canals here sit on two levels, so the caf\u00e9s and terraces are down at the water rather than up at street height \u2014 something Amsterdam does not have anywhere. The city dates back to the Romans, and the Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112 meters and 465 steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I lived in both Utrecht and Amsterdam, and when my parents visit they still choose to stay in Utrecht because it is so much calmer. No tour, no booking \u2014 take the train and walk to see the best the city has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Hague and Delft: For the Museums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Hague is 49 minutes away and has genuinely excellent museums. The Mauritshuis holds the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring and sits on the water next to the Binnenhof(pictured below). The Escher museum is very close by and is also excellent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can add Delft, which is twenty minutes further, but be realistic \u2014 combining the two makes for a very long day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rotterdam: The City That Looks Like Nowhere Else<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rotterdam was bombed flat during the WWII and rebuilt from almost nothing, which is why it feels completely different from every other Dutch city. No canal houses, no seventeenth-century center \u2014 modern architecture instead, and a genuinely different atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kr\u00f6ller-M\u00fcller Museum and Hoge Veluwe: For Art Lovers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Kr\u00f6ller-M\u00fcller is my favorite museum in the Netherlands, and almost nobody on a short Amsterdam trip makes it there. It holds the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world after the Van Gogh Museum itself, and it sits in the middle of the Hoge Veluwe National Park with a sculpture garden behind it. The day is not a museum visit. It is a museum inside a forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The park has free white bikes at the entrances that anyone can take, which is what turns this into a full day rather than an hour indoors. Museum and park together are \u20ac27.75 per person on a combined ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also the one trip here where you want a car. It is 1 hour 10 minutes from Amsterdam, and while you can technically get there by train and bus, the whole point is being able to stay in the park as long as you like rather than leaving when the bus goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the day actually cost us:<\/strong> \u20ac103 for a MyWheels car for the full day, plus \u20ac27.75 each for the museum and park \u2014 about \u20ac158 for two, or roughly \u20ac79 a head. The car is the same \u20ac103 whether there are two of you or four, so a group of four pays closer to \u20ac53 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bruges: Where the Tour Beats the Train<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bruges is the one genuine cross-border day trip from Amsterdam, and the train is more than the tour so save yourself the logistics of multiple trains and take the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The train costs \u20ac47 each way. That is \u20ac94 in fares to go independently, for a journey of 2 hours 51 minutes each direction. The guided day trip starts around \u20ac49 \u2014 including the transport. Going on your own costs you nearly double, for the privilege of handling your own logistics on a very long day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the only trip on this list where the tour is not merely more convenient but genuinely, substantially cheaper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the cities, no \u2014 and a car is usually worse. Parking is expensive and restricted in every Dutch centre, and the train reaches Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague faster than driving would.
