Tucked away in the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht is a unique blend of charm, history and culture, with half the crowds of Amsterdam. I lived in both Utrecht and Amsterdam, and when my parents visit they still choose to stay in Utrecht because it is so much calmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utrecht has everything a traveler could want in a day: scenic split-level canals, unique museums, a city dating back to the Romans, and a thriving food scene. If you have only have one day in Utrecht, here is how to make the most of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will arrive at Utrecht Centraal, one of the biggest train stations in the Netherlands. Head through the modern shopping center and walk slowly toward the Oudegracht, Utrecht’s old canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have breakfast at Ted’s All Day Brunch on the Oudegracht. It has a great terrace outside where you can sit right on the oldest canal in the city, and it is the perfect spot to fuel up before hitting the cobblestone streets. Once you have had your caffeine fix, stroll along the Oudegracht. The split-level canal houses are what make Utrecht different from every other Dutch city \u2014 the wharf level sits below the street, so caf\u00e9s and terraces are right down at the water. Watch the city come to life with cyclists and pedestrians and take in the relaxed local feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-Do: Climb the Dom Tower<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No visit to Utrecht is complete without the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. It stands at 112 meters and it is a 465-step climb to the top, but the panoramic view over the city and the surrounding countryside is well worth the effort. On the way up you pass through centuries of history, from medieval times to the present day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tower is over 700 years old. In 1674 a tornado came through town and destroyed the unfinished nave of the church. The tower was left undamaged \u2014 which is why the tower and the church still stand separately today, with a square in between where the nave used to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to book far ahead \u2014 last minute is usually fine, even at weekends. Do take the guided climb rather than going up on your own, though. Then go to DOMunder, an underground archaeological site that takes you through 2,000 years of history. The interactive tour goes beneath the Dom Tower to the Roman ruins of Utrecht, medieval cellars, and the remains of the Gothic cathedral destroyed in the 17th century. It is genuinely one of the more unusual museum experiences in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunch: A Bite in the Heart of the City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wander toward Museum Speelklok, one of the city’s quirkiest attractions. It is a museum dedicated to self-playing musical instruments \u2014 clocks, music boxes and automated street organs. Imagine the wonder of hearing an instrument play without a musician the first time. It takes you back to a time before it was normal to have music in your home. Even if you are not a big museum person, this one is playful and engaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kayak through the Utrecht canals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the weather is nice, rent a kayak and explore the canals by water. There are short loops and longer ones that take you further out of the city. It is my favorite way to spend a sunny afternoon in Utrecht \u2014 seeing the city from a kayak is a completely different view, and you pass right under the wharf-level terraces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of places rent along the canal and every one will give you a map for your route. It is very easy to follow, so you can relax and watch the canal houses go slowly past.<\/p>\n\n\n

Or take a canal cruise instead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If paddling yourself is not the plan, a guided cruise in an open boat covers the same canals with someone else steering and telling you what you are looking at. It is the better option if you are with kids, if the weather is not quite warm enough for a kayak, or if you would rather have your hands free for a drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evening: Drinks by the Canal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the day winds down, head back to the canalside for an early dinner. One of the best places to soak in the evening atmosphere is Beers & Barrels. This former warehouse has been converted into a modern bar-restaurant where you can enjoy craft beers and burgers right by the water. Try to grab a table on the terrace to fully appreciate the canals at dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are going to Utrecht with kids, the Miffy Museum is excellent \u2014 Miffy (Nijntje in Dutch) is essentially the Dutch Mickey Mouse, and Utrecht is her hometown. The museum is colorful with lots of hands-on activities for small children. Go on a weekday if you can, as it gets crowded at weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Castle de Haar: The Biggest Castle in the Netherlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have more than a day in Utrecht \u2014 or you are back for a second or third visit \u2014 Castle de Haar sits just outside the city. It is the largest castle in the Netherlands, rebuilt at the turn of the twentieth century in full neo-Gothic style, with towers, moats and formal gardens that look more French than Dutch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will be honest about the interior: it is not that impressive. The outside is what you come for. The grounds are beautiful, and the best way to do it is to cycle the 40 minutes out, pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it on the castle lawns rather than rushing through the rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is about 45 minutes from Utrecht Centraal on public transport, but going by bike is the better trip \u2014 a flat ride out through the countryside that turns the journey into part of the day rather than a commute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utrecht makes a genuinely good base for the Netherlands, not just a day trip. It is central enough to reach almost anywhere in the country in under two hours, and it is much calmer than Amsterdam in the evenings. My parents have stayed here on every visit for exactly that reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a splurge:<\/strong> Hotel Beijers<\/a> \u2014 a lovely small hotel, and the one to book if you want to be properly comfortable rather than just close to the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a budget:<\/strong> Stayokay Hostel Utrecht Centrum<\/a> \u2014 right in the middle of everything, with private rooms as well as dorms. Utrecht is compact enough that being central genuinely matters here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If You Come Back: Rietveld Schr\u00f6der House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Rietveld Schr\u00f6der House is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only building constructed entirely to De Stijl principles \u2014 the movement Mondrian belonged to. It is a genuine landmark of twentieth-century design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a second visit stop for me, though. On one day in Utrecht you are better off with the Dom Tower, the canals and one central museum. Save this for when you come back, and book ahead \u2014 visits are by guided tour in small groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to Utrecht from Amsterdam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The train from Amsterdam Centraal takes 27 minutes and runs several times an hour. Because of its central location, Utrecht has one of the biggest stations in the country, so it is easy to reach from anywhere in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy your ticket at the machines in the station \u2014 or simply use your credit card to tap on and off the train. If you have time at the station, follow the signs to the bicycle garage: it is the biggest in the world, with 12,656 parking spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also has a large university, so the city has a young, alive feeling to it that is very different from the tourist center of Amsterdam. Having lived in both, that is the thing I would tell anyone deciding between them: Amsterdam is bigger and has more to do, but Utrecht feels more like a city people actually live in.<\/p>\n\n\n
