It is the single most popular way to do this route: most of the people on our truck did exactly these twenty days and flew home from Victoria Falls. My husband and I did it in June 2026 as the opening leg of the longer Nairobi to Cape Town trip, and it’s the stretch where our group bonded hardest. It is also the leg with the longest drives. From about €3,300 per person on the 18–39 version.

Check dates and prices for Serengeti to Victoria Falls (affiliate link — I earn a small commission at no cost to you)

We had a year off and a long list, and Africa was at the top of it. The problem with Africa is that it’s enormous, the roads are hard and the borders are slow, and neither of us wanted to spend the first month of a sabbatical arguing with rental-car companies and border police. So we did the thing I’d normally be sceptical of and booked a group overland: a purpose-built truck, a tent, a cooking rota and twenty-odd strangers.

Twenty days later, standing at Victoria Falls, roughly half of those strangers were flying home and we were carrying on south. This post is for the half who fly home — which, on most departures, is most people. Three weeks is a length people can actually take off work; forty days isn’t. So here is the Nairobi to Victoria Falls leg as a complete trip in its own right: what it covers day by day, what it really costs in euros, what camping on a truck is actually like, who it suits, and what I’d tell you before you book.

The trip in numbers

Trip

Serengeti to Victoria Falls Overland: Night Stars & Spices (G Adventures code DNV)

Duration

20 days, Nairobi → Victoria Falls

Countries

Kenya, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Nights

13 participation camping · 2 full-service camping · 4 simple hotels (Zanzibar is twin-share in Stone Town and on the beach)

Meals included

18 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 14 dinners

Group

Max 22, average 20 — ours was sixteen for this leg

Transport

The “Lando”, a 24-seat purpose-built overland truck; 4x4s in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro; ferry to Zanzibar

Age range

18–39 (the all-ages Classic equivalent is “Kenya to Zimbabwe Overland”, code DKNV)

Physical rating

Very easy — the hardest things are early starts and carrying your own bag

Price

From about €3,300 per person (G Adventures lists from US$3,799, October 2026)

Crew

Two CEOs — one drives, one leads and cooks — plus local safari guides in the parks

Itinerary and prices from the G Adventures trip page, checked October 2026; euro figures rounded. Same twenty days, same stops, same truck, near-identical price.

We booked the 18–39 version and, as a couple in our mid-thirties, were nervous the whole truck would be 22. It wasn’t. We had a real spread of ages, mostly Europeans, a lot of solo travellers — men and women about equally — and a few other couples. The younger energy was a big part of why the trip worked. For comparison, we’ve also done an Intrepid trip through Kenya and Uganda with an older group: lovely, just a different rhythm — quieter evenings, earlier nights.

How to choose: under 40 and you want the group that’s still at the campsite bar at midnight, book DNV. Over 39, or under 40 and wanting something calmer, book DKNV. You see exactly the same Africa.

This leg is the one most people do

Something nobody told us before booking: the long Nairobi to Cape Town overland isn’t really one trip. It’s three — Nairobi to Victoria Falls (this one, 20 days), Victoria Falls to Windhoek (8 days) and Windhoek to Cape Town (14 days) — sold either separately or strung together on one ticket. Only a handful of people on our truck did all forty days. The great majority did either this leg, or the twenty-one days from Victoria Falls to Cape Town.

That matters for two reasons. First, it means this isn’t a cut-down version of anything: Nairobi to Victoria Falls has the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar, Lake Malawi, a proper Zambian national park and the Falls — most of what people picture when they think of East Africa. Second, it means everyone on your truck starts together on day one in Nairobi. There’s no breaking into a group that already has its in-jokes. Our sixteen bonded faster than any group I’ve travelled with, and when we said goodbye to most of them at Victoria Falls it felt like the end of a trip, not the middle of one. If you’ve read my review of the full 40 days, you’ll know I’d do the whole thing again — but if you only have three weeks, I’d book this leg without a second thought.

Day by day

Day 1 — Nairobi. Arrival day, no planned activities, a welcome meeting in the evening to meet the CEOs and the group. Use the evening for one thing: visas. Our CEO had everyone who hadn’t finished theirs applying from the hotel wifi that first night, so that nobody held the truck up at a border later. More on that below.

Day 2 — Nairobi to Arusha. South through Maasai country and across the Namanga border into Tanzania, with Kilimanjaro on the horizon if the cloud lifts. The Serengeti is everything you expect. Ngorongoro was one of our absolute highlights of the entire route: it’s far less crowded than the big parks, so you get the crater floor at sunrise without a queue of jeeps around every lion — just the animals, the light, and time to actually watch them. Both parks and all the drives are included; the Serengeti balloon safari (from about €520) is the one big-ticket optional, pre-bookable.

Day 6 — Arusha to Bagamoyo. A long drive east to the coast and the old slave-and-ivory trading port of Bagamoyo, now a quiet UNESCO-listed town.

Days 7–9 — Zanzibar. Drive to Dar es Salaam, ferry across to Zanzibar, and three nights on the island: a beach resort on the east coast, a completely free day, then a night in Stone Town with the spice-plantation tour included. If you haven’t sorted them before you fly, do it on the first night in Nairobi; our CEO made a point of it so nobody held the group up later.

Cash, cards and borders

US dollars are the currency that works everywhere on this leg, and cards barely work anywhere until you reach Namibia on the longer route. We each carried about US$500 and found it was more than we needed: ATMs were easier to find than expected, and the CEO tells the group before every stop exactly what’s coming up over the next few days, what it costs, and whether it can go on a card or has to be cash. The truck stops in the last town before each border and the first after it for ATMs and exchange. Malawian and Zambian kwacha are near-impossible to change back once you’ve left, so withdraw small. Almost every price at a market is negotiable.

What “participation camping” really means

Thirteen of nineteen nights are in a tent you pitch and strike yourself. The tents are three-person domes shared by two, so there’s room for bags inside, and G Adventures provides a thick sleeping mat; you bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

“Participation” means the group runs the camp. On day one the CEOs split everyone into teams of three or four, and the teams rotate through the jobs: kitchen help, washing up, packing and unpacking the truck, the cool-box run (ice, cooler, sweeping the Lando floor), and a day off. Because it’s organised rather than left to volunteers, everyone pitches in and — on our truck at least — everyone was a good sport about it. The jobs take twenty minutes.

You get used to it fast. Camping was my biggest worry going in, and it evaporated within days. The tent goes up in minutes by week two, and a sleeping bag under East African stars is not a hardship. If you’ve camped on the O Trek in Patagonia or the Tour du Mont Blanc, this is softer — the truck carries everything.

The upgrade trick. What made camping sustainable was that many campsites offer a private room for roughly €17–85 a night. Our rule was that anything under about €25 was an automatic yes. A real bed and a private toilet every few nights breaks the camping up beautifully. Budget for it.

The Lando. A 24-seat purpose-built truck with reclining seats, a kitchen and lockers you reach from inside; USB charging at every seat but no mains sockets and no toilet — you stop at the roadside for what every crew calls a “bushy bushy”. There’s a tank of filtered drinking water on board you can refill from at any time, which meant twenty days without buying a single plastic bottle. We rotated seats every day so nobody got stuck at the back. Dust and heat, which I’d braced for, were never a problem inside. Assume no wifi on the truck or at most campsites — connectivity comes from your own eSIM (below).

Sitting is the hard part. This is the leg with the longest drive days, particularly the run from Zanzibar down through southern Tanzania and across Malawi into Zambia — a handful of days where you wake before dawn, drive all day and arrive at sunset. Bring resistance bands: twenty minutes with them at a campsite made a real difference to how we felt, and we sometimes got up early to fit exercise in. Arrive with a tablet full of downloaded films and audiobooks — I got through one a week — because there’s no signal to stream on for much of it.

Showers. Every campsite has toilets and showers, and most of them had hot water. The few that didn’t were in the middle of extraordinary national parks, where you’re not going to complain.

Food. The CEO who cooks is the single biggest variable on this trip. Ours was fantastic — we ate well and we ate healthily, which I hadn’t expected from a camping truck — but that depends on who G Adventures assigns to your departure. Meals ranged from pasta to chicken with ugali to steak nights. The truck stops at a supermarket every few days, so you can always get snacks and drinks (or a rotisserie chicken) at grocery-store prices, and a couple of times the crew handed us cash to buy our own lunch in town. Easily vegetarian-friendly — the vegetarians on board ate as well as everyone else. Almost every campsite has a bar where a beer is a euro or two.

Who this leg is for — and who should skip it

It’s for you if you have three weeks, you want the classic East African safari plus a beach break plus a real taste of Malawi and Zambia, you’re happy with long drive days and simple facilities, and you’d rather have a built-in group than organise five countries of logistics yourself.

It’s not for you if you need a private bathroom every night (upgrades help, but not everywhere), you dislike group decisions, you want to spend a week in one place, or you’re after a luxury safari — this isn’t that, and the price says so.

Do you need a tour at all? Yes. There are stretches of this route I would not have felt comfortable doing without a guide — the border crossings and some of the roads between them especially. Book a tour, whichever operator; don’t try to stitch this together yourself on a first visit.

As a couple. Most of the truck is solo travellers and we wondered whether we’d feel like the odd ones out. We didn’t — there were a few other couples, and the mix was good. Couples share a tent; solo travellers are paired with someone of the same gender, and the CEOs asked early on whether anyone wanted to switch (nobody did). There was plenty of room to peel off and have time just the two of us, especially at the campsite in the afternoons, but honestly we got on so well with the group that we spent most meals and free time with everyone else anyway.

Solo — and as a solo woman. Same-gender tent pairing means no single supplement unless you pay for your own tent. There were a lot of solo women on our truck and not one of them had any issues. Being alone is not the problem on this trip; finding time to be alone is.

Health. Nothing went round our truck beyond a few passing stomach upsets. Several people reacted to their malaria tablets — mostly nausea — and felt fine within a day of stopping them; talk to your doctor about which prophylaxis suits you and start early enough to find out how you tolerate it. Pack a proper first-aid kit, because the pharmacy is often a day away.

Wildlife at night. Nobody carries a gun in the camps. Elephants, hippos and hyenas do walk through — the rule is that animals avoid tents, so keep the door zipped, and if your headlamp catches eyes when you want to go out at night, don’t.

The honest lowlights

It is a lot of driving. No way round this: five countries in twenty days means long days on the truck, and this leg has the longest of the whole route. You accept it as the price of covering that much ground — and the pay-off is that by Victoria Falls you have seen every animal you could have wanted, several times over.

There is almost no physical activity. If you’re an active person this is what will get to you: you’re either sitting in a safari vehicle or sitting on the truck getting to the next one. Bring the resistance bands.

Sixteen (or twenty-two) people through one door. The group is a joy for finding your people and a trial at a border post where every passport goes through one window, or in the queue for a shower block.

G Adventures vs the other overlanders on this route

Nairobi to Victoria Falls is run by half a dozen operators and the route barely changes; the price, truck, group age and inclusions do.

Operator

Style

Age

Notes

G Adventures (DNV)

Participation camping

18–39

The one we took. The cheaper overlanders look cheaper, but far less is in the base price, which means a pay-or-skip decision almost every day. On G Adventures the big safaris and Zanzibar are already in, so even if you add nothing at all you still get a very full three weeks. Prices move constantly — check each operator’s site.

Packing list: what earned its place

Number one, by a distance: a buff or neck gaiter. The safari vehicles are open and the tracks are dusty, and you’ll want something over your mouth and nose for hours at a time. We used ours constantly and it was surprisingly hard to buy one along the way — bring two.

The unexpected winner: a deflated football. One of the guys on our truck packed a flat football and pumped it up on arrival, and it became the most-used item on the trip. The truck stops constantly for fuel and bathrooms, and every single time the ball came out — twenty minutes of running around on a long drive day, and at almost every petrol station the locals joined in. If you have room, bring two or three and give them away as you go.

After that: resistance bands; a phone or tablet loaded with audiobooks and films; a refillable water bottle, because of the Lando’s filtered tank; a headlamp; a real camping pillow; a sleeping-bag liner; noise-cancelling headphones for drive days; binoculars; sunglasses for the open safari vehicles, because wind fatigue on the eyes is real; a power bank, since campsite sockets are rare; a folder of printed visas; and more US dollars than you think, in clean notes. Leave at home: the drone (illegal or permit-bound in nearly every park) and anything you’d mind losing to red dust. Laundry is possible every five to seven days for a few euros, or by hand.

Staying connected: eSIMs work

I expected to go dark for three weeks. Instead an Airalo eSIM worked surprisingly well across the whole route — we used it the entire trip and had signal far more often than not. Nobody on our truck bothered with local physical SIMs. One tip that saved us real money: buy country by country, not the regional Africa plan — the single-country packages were much cheaper, and switching at each border takes a minute. Install the Kenya one before you land in Nairobi so it’s live when you walk out of the airport, and expect nothing from campsite wifi.

Get an Airalo eSIM for your first country (affiliate link)

Booking tips: when to go, which departure, how to save

Season. We went in June — African winter, dry season for the whole route — and it was incredible; I wouldn’t change it. Late May still catches the tail of the East African rains; by mid-June it’s dry and game viewing is at its best. November to March is green, hot and cheaper. If your dates are flexible, June to August is the sweet spot.

Discounts. G Adventures runs 20–25% sales on specific departures several times a year. Watch the trip page for a couple of months before committing rather than booking the first date you see.

Direction. This leg runs Nairobi to Victoria Falls; the reverse exists on the longer route. If you’re only doing this leg, Nairobi is the natural start — you want the Serengeti early and the Falls as the finale.

Extending. If you can find eight more days, the Victoria Falls to Windhoek leg adds Chobe and a night in the Okavango Delta; three more weeks gets you to Cape Town through Namibia. And if you can take the full forty, buying it as the single 40-day ticket is cheaper than booking the legs separately.

Check dates, prices and current discounts

Would I do it again?

Absolutely. What became clear over those first twenty days is that an overland truck is the best way to experience and cover a large amount of Africa — not the most comfortable, not the fastest, but the best. The logistics of doing the same route yourself would be overwhelming, and in places frankly dodgy; on the truck, the borders, the park bookings and the “where do we sleep tonight” questions simply happen while you look out of the window. You will sit more than you’d like and you’ll get dusty. In return you get the Serengeti, the crater at sunrise, Zanzibar, Lake Malawi, a leopard in Luangwa and Victoria Falls — and a truck full of people from all over Europe who went through it with you. Trip of a lifetime, even with zero optional activities added.

Book Nairobi to Victoria Falls with G Adventures (affiliate link — thank you for supporting the blog)

FAQ

How long is the Nairobi to Victoria Falls overland? Twenty days and nineteen nights with G Adventures, through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Is it the same as the first part of the Nairobi to Cape Town trip? Yes.
