DO and DON’T:<\/strong> Have a drink in the square in front of the Pantheon, especially at night. It is a beautiful way to end the day and take time to enjoy the beautiful view. It is expensive but worth it for one drink. DON’T<\/strong> Eat in this square or any of the main tourist piazzas. The food is very average and overly expensive. Try walking a few blocks out of the touristy areas for a better meal for a better price. The Pantheon is free to enter but is formally considered a church, so you must have your shoulders covered.<\/p>\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at the free public fountains scattered all over the city, known as “nasoni” (big noses) for their curved spouts. Rome has thousands of them, the water is safe and constantly running, and it’s a genuinely huge money-saver over buying bottled water all day. Pro tip: cover the main spout with your finger and a smaller hole on top will shoot water upward, perfect for drinking straight from the fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DON’T:<\/strong> Fall for the “menu turistico” trap. If a restaurant has a laminated menu with photos of the food, a tout outside waving you in, or a translated menu in five languages plastered on a big sign, walk on. Good Roman trattorias don’t need to hustle for customers \u2014 look for small handwritten daily specials instead, often only in Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Beat the heat by renting a bike or scooter to get around the city. Rome is a city that has rentable scooters all throughout the city. You can access them using your Uber app and unlock them to quickly cross the city. Especially great for the Colosseum and Vatican, which are a bit far from the city’s center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DON’T:<\/strong> Forget to validate your public transit ticket in the little yellow or green machine every time you board a bus, tram, or metro \u2014 even if you already bought it. Inspectors do random checks and hand out on-the-spot fines with zero sympathy for tourists who didn’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> <\/strong>Explore other neighborhoods! Since our Roman friend recommended Trastevere, we have always stayed there. The neighborhood is a foodie paradise<\/a> and a quick walk over the river into the touristy part of the city. Highly recommend staying in this neighborhood. We stayed at Maya Rhome<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Throw one, two, or three coins into the Trevi Fountain. One is for returning to Rome, two are for falling in love with a Roman, and three are either for getting married to this Roman or getting divorced; the sources weren’t that clear about it. Worth a try, right? While you’re fountain-hopping elsewhere in the city, save the coin toss for the Trevi specifically \u2014 it’s the only one with that particular legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DON’T:<\/strong> Go to the Trevi Fountain by day; way too crowded. It is better to go there early in the morning or late at night (much more romantic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Have a gelato in a REAL gelateria. Our Rome tip: Giolitti! It’s been serving Rome since 1900 and is a short walk from the Trevi Fountain \u2014 perfect for cooling off after the coin toss.<\/p>\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Buy your Vatican tickets<\/a> in advance! The line to buy tickets on-site is always unbelievably long. All of this can be avoided by purchasing the tickets in advance or, better yet, booking a tour. The Vatican is massive, so having a tour guide to show you the highlights is super helpful. I highly recommend a Vatican Tour<\/a> <\/strong>to skip the line entirely and have someone to show you around. Make sure you have your shoulders and upper legs covered \u2014 it’s strictly enforced. It is one of those experiences that you do not want to miss so plan ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Go on a foody Rome Tour to learn more about the history of Roman food! Rome for foodies without a doubt! We loved this food tour<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n DON’T<\/strong>: Start a diet before your trip to Rome. Eat all the pizza, pasta, and gelato, and worry about the rest when you get home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Go book a tour guide for the Colosseum Tour<\/a> to beat the line! It is a popular destination, so book a tour to skip the line!<\/p>\n\n\n\n DON’T:<\/strong> Go to the Colosseum\/Roman Forum in the heat of the day, especially during summer. Rome Tips – It get HOT in the summer, and the Forum has no shade to hide under. Book a tour of the Colosseum\/Forum for early in the day or early in the evening. The Colosseum Tour<\/a> includes the Forum, giving you a history lesson of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DON’T<\/strong>: Start your Colosseum\/Forum tour hungry. It is a long tour, so stop for sandwiches at Fuorinorma<\/a>, close to the Colosseum. A sandwich so good we went twice. Get the parmigiana, easily one of the best sandwiches of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DO:<\/strong> Climb up to the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden) on the Aventine Hill for one of the best views in Rome without the crowds \u2014 especially good in the late afternoon when the light hits St. Peter’s Basilica. While you’re there, look for the famous “Keyhole” in the gate of the Knights of Malta nearby, which perfectly frames the dome of St. Peter’s through the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are some hotel recommendations<\/strong> for where to stay in Rome (All in our preferred neighborhood – Trastevere):<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rome is a must on every first trip to Italy. The nearby Umbria region is just amazing if you want to get into the countryside of Italy. It is a 2-hour drive from Rome. It is just as beautiful as Tuscany but without any of the crowds.
