5 Dinge, die man über Geocaching wissen sollte

Irgendwie fühle ich mich wie Indiana Jones. Ich bin auf der Suche nach verborgenen Schätzen, löse Rätsel und folge den Linien, die mich zum nächsten Zielort führen. Aber nix von wegen Peitsche und Fedora, in meiner Hand halte ich ein GPS-Gerät und auf’m Kopf hab ich ’ne dicke Wollmütze, es ist nämlich kalt und ich steh im Wald in Berchtesgaden.
Am Anfang war Geocaching für mich auch ein Buch mit sieben Siegeln, naja, eher ein GPS-Gerät mit sieben Passwörtern. Als ich die Chance bekam Geocaching auf einer Pressereise mal auszuprobieren und das auch noch unter fachkundiger Leitung von Geocaching-Experte Markus Gründel hab ich nicht zweimal überlegt. Und es ist nicht so tricky wie man glauben mag, wenn man den Dreh einmal raus hat, lässt einen das Schatzfieber nicht mehr so schnell los. Doch bevor es los geht sollte man ein paar Dinge wissen.

Was ist Geocaching?
Geocaching ist an sich wie eine Schnitzeljagd. Nur dass man eben ein GPS-Gerät in der Hand hat und mit Hilfe von Koordinaten nach Schätzen sucht. Meistens sind die Schätze irgendwo in der freien Natur, weshalb viele auch Geocaching mit Wandern verbinden, es gibt aber auch Schätze, die in Städten versteckt sind.
Wie sportlich muss man sein?
Geocaching gibt es in verschiedenen Schwierigkeitsgraden. Es gibt Routen die perfekt für einen gemütlichen Spaziergang sind, für andere braucht man eine gute Wander-Ausrüstung und bei manchen sollte man besser einen Taucheranzug im Gepäck haben.
Ist Geocaching eine Trendsportart?
Geocaching gibt es mittlerweile schon seit dem Jahr 2000. Der erste Geocache war ein schwarzer Plastikeimer mit CDs, einer Videokassette, etwas Geld, einem Buch, einer Steinschleuder und einer Konservendose mit Bohnen gefüllt. Heute sind auf der bekanntesten Geocaching Datenbank www.geocaching.com 1,5 Millionen Schätze verzeichnet.
Was sind das für Schätze?
Ein Geocache kann so ziemlich alles sein, zumeist ist es aber irgendwelcher Krimskrams. Wer einen Schatz gefunden hat, darf ihn sich nehmen, muss aber einen neuen Schatz im Cache deponieren. Der Schatz befindet sich in der Regel in einem wasserdichten Behälter wie zum Beispiel einer Tupperdose. Immer mit dabei: ein Logbuch, in das man sich eintragen kann.

Was brauche ich zum Geocaching?
Ein handelsübliches Navi reicht nicht aus, da es den Standpunkt nicht so genau ermittelt, man braucht also ein GPS-Gerät. Das bekommt man schon ab €150. Wer etwas tiefer in die Tasche greift bekommt auch GPS-Geräte mit eingebauter Kamera für Foto- und Filmaufnahmen, damit man seine Schatzsuche direkt dokumentieren kann.
Das ist auch ein Schatz.
Wer das Ganze lieber unter professioneller Anleitung ausprobieren möchte, für den habe ich einen Tipp: Im InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort gibt es seit neuestem ein Geocaching-Paket, das nicht nur Übernachtung, Frühstück, Abendessen, eine Massage (!) und das Buch von Geocaching Experte Markus Gründel beinhaltet, sondern auch leihweise die GPS-Geräte, die man zum Geocaching braucht.Mal ganz unabhängig von den über 1000 Caches, die hier in der Gegend versteckt sind, ist Berchtesgaden immer eine Reise wert.

Geocaching is pretty cool! We’ve got a huge group of cachers here in Florida, I just spent some time at the recent Finders Fest – over 100 people camping and geocaching in the Ocala National Forest. When I’m in the woods, I’ll occasionally look for a cache, it’s really addictive!

As soon as my smartphones screen is fixed we are going to get into Geocaching. I have done a little bit of it before and it is so much fun and goes hand in hand with travel!

I’m on a RTW trip and have found at least one geocache in each country I’ve been in. It’s the perfect way to spend a day wandering a city in search of cool sights you wouldn’t normally see.
Highlights: A geocache at some Inca ruins near Cuzco with no other tourists at all. Not on any set tour or anything. Had the place to myself for four hours.
Climbing the side of Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio. Going down the mountain was harder than going up.
Hiking the Carpathian mountains in search of elusive geocaches.
Finding out of the way temples in Bangkok that are stunning, yet surprisingly little visited by tourists.
