5 Travelous Winter City Trips
42My eyes can’t stop tearing and I’m pulling my scarf up and higher until the wind doesn’t freeze my breath anymore. You can’t see it now, but I’m smiling. I don’t know why but when I’m going on a city trip it’s ALWAYS winter. And I always love it. Winter city trips are amazing. Especially in Europe. High season is over and even the bone-chilling cold can’t hide the romantic side of each city. Imagine glittering snow flakes, frozen rivers and the smell of mulled wine filling the air… sigh. Now I want to go on a city trip.

Here are my 5 favourite winter city trips:
Copenhagen
Even when your hands are so shivering you barely can hold it, that’s one thing you really have to do when in Copenhagen: eating a Hot Dog at one of the many food booths. You can warm your fingers with a gløgg later in Paludan Bogcafe, one of my favourite cafés. It’s a combination of bookstore, living room and café – cozy and, for Copenhagen, with reasonable prices. PLUS: they have free WIFI. Sun is shining and the weather good looking? Perfect! What about a trip to the beach? Take the metro M2 to “Amager Strand” and you’ll find yourself at a gorgeous beach with a view right over to Sweden.
If you’re in Copenhagen on the first Friday in November you’re a very lucky person. Because it’s Jul Dag – Christmas beer day. At every bar at exactly 8:59 p.m. the Christmas brew will be introduced. And if you know the Danes you know that this party night will be legendary. In February Copenhagen is all about Wondercool, the winter festival.

Amager Strand
Amsterdam
I can’t remember where this gorgeous hippie hand bag is now, but I remember I bought it at the Waterlooplein flea market, normally totally crowed during summer, it’s perfect for bargain hunting during winter. From mid November you can buy Oliebollen and Poffertjes (traditional doughnuts and pancakes) at food booths all around the city. Best with a hot chocolate. And go ice skating! Especially when the channels are frozen… Yes, I had a very romantic weekend there with my then-boyfriend. Well, actually not. It was so freaking cold and the heating in our hotel was broken so we had to go to sleep with all our clothes on and even warm up the clothes with a hair dryer. True story. I suggest looking for a cozy and warm apartment in Amsterdam in advance so the only naked people you’ll see won’t be the one in the sex museum.
Stockholm
Uh, I made some mistakes when I visited Stockholm for the first time but after all I had an amazing weekend. What I liked most was wandering around the old part of Stockholm, Gamla Stan where our hotel was located, and watching the mounting of the guard at the Royal Palace, which happens there every day around noon. If it’s too cold to stay outside I suggest taking a trip with one of the sightseeing busses, they will take you all around the city. Really cool is also a trip with one of the sightseeing boats where you can drink hot Glögg and eat the traditional pea soup while watching Stockholm passing by.

Berlin
Ok, I have to admit I’m always telling people: Don’t visit Berlin during winter (if you haven’t been here before). Because winter in Berlin is terrible. It’s so f***ing cold and the sidewalks are mostly totally frozen you can’t really walk. It’s likely you will hate it. BUT: if you have been to Berlin before (and that’s equal with falling in love with this amazing city) you probably will even love the winter here. When the streets are decorated with all this Christmas lights and snow is slowly covering the Brandenburg Gate and the smell of mulled wine leads you to the next Christmas market… well, you get the picture. Talking about Christmas markets, that’s one thing you really should do. There are nearly 100 different ones all around the city. My favourite is the one at Gendarmenmarkt. And if you’re up for a different kind of Christmas Shopping I recommend the Holy Shit one. To save all the money for the shopping (don’t forget to check out all the vintage stores) you can easily find some cheap apartments in Berlin.
East Side Gallery in Berlin
Paris
I have to say it. Yes. Are you ready? Ok… “We’ll always have Paris”. Awwwwwww. I fell in love with Paris when I’ve been there for the first time when I was 18 (Jee, that’s 14 years ago. Can you believe that???). I was sitting on the steps in front of Sacre Coeur, the city of love was lying to my feet and in the very moment when sun was setting a guy played “Imagine” from John Lennon on his guitar. Sigh. And now imagine this same scene with snow. See, even more romantic, right? I’m not really a romantic girl, but the thought of the city of lights and love covered with snow, which dampens all the hectic sounds and leaves you alone with your thoughts… sigh. I can’t think of a better place to be during winter. And when in Paris the best thing would be to stay in an Amélie-like apartment, right? So what should you do there besides falling in love? Go for a round of ice skating in front of the Hôtel de Ville, the Renaissance-style city hall. Stroll along the nearly empty (compared to high season) Champs-Elysées or go bargain hunting during the six week long January sale.

Great post! The only one of these I’ve been to in the winter is Berlin and I loved it. I arrived the day after Christmas and got to enjoy all the outdoor Christmas markets (adorable!).
I actually really like Europe in the winter – probably because I grew up in Minnesota and have lived in Chicago for the last 10 years!
Thank you Katie! Happy you loved Berlin during winter!
I have to suggest Oslo, you know
Gorgeous in the cold of winter, especially on a boat out on the fjord: the cool, very modern Opera House on one side, the medieval Akershus Castle on the other, snow falling, gløgg in hand…
Oh I would love to visit Olso in the winter. Sounds amazing. (And as I just have been to the airport in Oslo so far and never had a chance to explore the city I should go there anyway
)
Prague! Gorgeous any time of year but extra special in the snow.
In the US if you ski (ANY type) travel to the little town of Bozeman, MT for snowy street festivals, bacon wrapped dates (who doesn’t love their date wrapped in bacon?) and the driest fluffy snow you can ask for in the Rockies.
Maybe I just have a thing for snow
bacon wrapped dates: YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY! And Prague also sounds good for a winter city trip!
Such an informative post in your very distinctive writing style <3 xo
Thanks lovely! I think it’s time for you to come back to Berlin!
I love the photos in this post! All of these sound like great adventures.
Thank you Joanna, had a travelous time in all of these cities!
I’ve done Berlin, Stockholm and Copenhagen all in March, which is wintery enough. And Berlin again in January. I quite liked Stockholm and definitely would go back. Berlin is indeed a lot of fun, but I think I could skip Copenhagen.
Winter travel works out the best in December, I think. When all the of the Christmas festivals and lights and such are out. Late Jan and February in a lot of places can just be dark, cold and overcast.
I totally agree with you, that December is the best month for city trips. But don’t forget the sales in January and February… as I do love to shop in every city I visit this is also pretty important
You’ve got me dreaming of another city winter trip, but I think I’ll have to settle for J-dag – also know as snefald (snow fall) or snestorm (blizzard)in Copenhagen. And I don’t even like the Xmas brew.
haha. Oh I had a fun night out last year at J-Dag but I also don’t really liked the beer, as it tastes too strong in my opinion… but the second tasted better than the first one… and after the third one I really liked it
Winter in Berlin is beyond cold! The kind of cold that makes your face ache. But for all that (yup, I’m a Berlin convert) it is the loveliest place to visit. Hole up in Weinerei, sup read wine and feel smug when you see how cold it is outside…
Yes, Berlin is the perfect city. Even in winter
Nice round up! I’m looking forward to spend a winter in Berlin even if it seems to be pretty rough.
Paris is fantastic until New Year’s eve and then it gets awful. The city is gorgeous with all the Christmas lights, the decorated front stores and the happy Parisians. But once the holidays are past, it becomes the most depressing city in the world to so I you might want to avoid it after Jan 1st
I really hope you will love Berlin even after spending the winter here…
and speaking about Paris in January… don’t you forget the sales??? Hello! No city can be depressing when I can shop there till I drop
Edinburgh is a great city in winter but cold! Heading to Brussels, Bruges and Amsterdam this year (as well as Egypt but that doesn’t count). Will let you know what I think!
Never been to Edinburgh, Brussels and Bruges – would love to know what you think about it!
I did a few years of winter breaks in Europe in January – mainly because of the super cheap flights – and the bets was Venice. So atmospheric in the cold misty mornings, hardly any tourists and lots of beautiful squares to sit in and warm up with a hot coffee.
Oh yes, I bet Venice is also a great winter city trip. Only been there during sommer but would love to see this beautiful less crowded…
I like anyplace that has a Christmas market, after that it’s wherever is close to a ski hill! Although I did like Copenhagen in winter.
You really should visit the Christmas market in Tübingen! The medieval city centre covered with snow and decorated with thousands of lights is pretty awesome!
Great post. It’s always nice to visit cities in winter, when the crowds are smaller and prices a bit lower than in the the high season. I’ve never been to Europe in the winter. The only city I’ve visited in winter was Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I didn’t find the temperature too bad. But I’m from Edmonton, Alberta – and our winters are pretty brutal.
I bet Canada during winter is amazing. So wanna go there one day.
Last time we visited was in 2004! Your post makes me want to move to Europe just so I can go on city trips!
So then it’s definitely time for another Europe trip!
Brrrrr. Europe in winter sounds sooo cold. Check out Beijing in winter, and see why it is a GREAT idea: http://www.50plusandontherun.com/2011/09/chinese-food-is-good-cold-right.html
haha, IT IS COLD! AND I LOVE IT!
and thanks for the tip! That’s really good to know!
I enjoyed reading your post! Winter does make cities look beautiful but experiencing the cold is one thing I cannot stand!
true, but there’s no such thing as bad weather just bad clothes…
Thanks for the tips to try Oliebollen and Poffertjes. I want a list of a bunch of food I should try while I’m in Europe. I have no idea what to eat since it’ll be my first time (I’m from the states) and i want to try everything that I can’t try at home. Any other food suggestions would be amazing!
Hi Casey, for sure you have to try a HOT DOG in Copenhagen! Yummy! And a Currywurst and a kebab in Berlin! Loved Kotbullar in Sweden and in France, well cheese and red wine
Have fun in Europe!
Paris in winter is a must for me before I die! Are there any places I have to see when I go?
I’m just the opposite – I never get to travel in the winter, so this was a really enjoyable peak at the other side of things! Thanks for sharing!
Great tips, I didn’t know about the beach in Copenhagen, sounds lovely. A crisp sunny winter day in Stockholm is almost better than summer
But the winner is….tatatata…eindeutig NEW YORK!! But blame it on The Winter
Ahhh, da war ich NOCH NIE!!!! (ich weiß) xx
Hi Yvonne,
